Circular Economy Strategy: Hard to Recycle Plastics Business Case, FOGO Business Case and C&D Business Case

Description

The Circular Economy concept, which strives to eliminate waste and pollution while maximising the value of existing resources, is central to the CRJO's vision. This economic model not only offers the potential for substantial economic gains but also addresses critical global challenges, including climate change and resource depletion.

Following analysis of the composition of waste streams and current waste management infrastructure within the Canberra Region Joint Organisation, Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, Food Organic and Garden Organic (FOGO) waste, and Hard-to-Recycle Plastics, were identified as streams with the most significant circular economy opportunities. The Stable Group was engaged to investigate commercial opportunities both within the CRJO region and beyond. This involves sourcing waste materials and marketing the products derived from recycling, aligning with the NSW Government's Circular Economy Policy Statement and Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2021-2041.

The Stable prepared three comprehensive business cases, promoting circular economy principles, attracting investment, and focusing on a sustainable approach to the management of:

  1. Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste in NSW
  2. Food Organics and Garden Organise (FOGO) Waste in NSW
  3. Hard-to-recycle Plastics
